It's a race against the clock tonight as Sheriff's investigators continue to work on an afternoon bank robbery in the Village of Corfu.
By any account, it was a normal afternoon in the quiet village, until a hooded man walked into the M&T Bank branch at the corner of Routes 33 and 77. He grabbed a load of cash, and booked it out the front door. He's believed to have at least started out on foot, possibly headed north.
Nearby Corfu Elementary School was locked down as a precaution for a time, although the robber reportedly never displayed a weapon inside the bank.
Sheriff's Deputies are unclear as to whether the man may have have a car ride from the scene. Several witnesses reported some sort of vehicle, but no match was found in the immediate area. Thruway authorities did not report spotting any suspicious vehicle this afternoon.
Witnesses were not able to provide many more details beyond that, according to Chief Deputy Gordon Dibble.
According to bank personnel and surveillance video, the suspect is described as a white male of average build, late-twenties to late-thirties in age. He was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, jeans, and possibly workboots at the time of the robbery. Investigators on the scene were able to find some footprints of interest, but those did not provide any immediately hot leads, even with the use of K-9 patrol units.

Sheriff’s Deputies are sweeping the area northeast of the bank. At lasy report, they believe the suspect fled north.
Also, authorities with the New York State Thruway have been advised and are on the lookout for a silver four-door sedan, possible a 1990’s model Pontiac.
