The March 8, 2017 windstorm initiated approximately 700 calls to the 911 center from 11:00 a.m to midnight.  From noon to 3:p.m. there were 282 calls.  There were three Dispatchers on duty from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and four Dispatchers on duty from 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., which is the maximum the 911 center can staff.  Normal operations require just two.  The Dispatchers prioritized and coordinated the response of Law Enforcement, Fire Departments, Highway Departments and the utility companies.  The average wait time for these callers was merely six seconds.

The seven towns of Attica, Bennington, Covington, Java, Orangeville, Sheldon and Wethersfield suffered the majority of the damage and the related power outages.  At the peak, over 8,000 customers were without power in the County.  There were no injuries or deaths related to this storm, however, there were four tractor trailers blown over along with countless downed trees along with approximately fifty utility poles. 

The Law Enforcement agencies in the county handled ninety-five calls for service with the Sheriff’s Office responding to the most at fifty-two.  The Fire Departments responded to thirty-seven calls with the Attica Fire Department covering the most with twelve.  The Varysburg Fire Department also housed the Emergency Shelter from Thursday evening through Saturday morning.  The County and Town Highway Departments cut and cleared countless trees from obstructed roadways. 

Sheriff Rudolph says, “Professional dispatching, strong teamwork from the public and private sectors, and the skilled volunteerism from the Fire/EMS and Red Cross communities provided the finest in Public Safety amid the commotion of this day long incident and its aftermath.”
