JC Penney Released a list of 138 stores closing around the country within the next few months.
Batavia was not included in the list of pending closures.
In fact the only store in the Western New York area on the list was the Dunkirk location in the Dunkirk- Fredonia Plaza.
City Manager Jason Molino sees the company’s official confirmation that the City Centre anchor tenant will remain as a positive sign for the future of the complex.
Molino said, “Prior to settlement discussions they had advised us there was no concern over the store and obviously that was confirmed to date. For us, we think it's a great decision on their part because Penney's is a big part of our retail downtown and it will continue to add and hopefully grow as we begin to trigger more investment in the mall itself.”
Along with the closures approximately 5,000 positions will be impacted.
JC Penney is also relocating their headquarters from Lakeland Florida to Buena Park California.
