Within minutes of the first alarm just after 11 last night flames were shooting 20 feet into the air.
The garage at 141 Ross became fully involved.
City of Batavia Fire Captain Dan Herberger directed firefighting:

"We had a very deep-seated fire with a fiberglass boat and several cars inside the garage, a tremndous fire load. It was very difficult to get in and get to the seat of the fire."

The fire was brought under control in less than 30 minutes.

Dr. James SunserGenesee Community College is estimating a hundred students will enroll in New York State’s new free college tuition program called the Excelsior Scholarship.
GCC President James Sunser says there are pros and cons to the program:

"The biggest plus is that it will increase the potential and the access for students to get a college education. The biggest challenge right now is that the rules haven't been completely fleshed out and need to get done so that we can advise students  properly."

It will take eight months for the school to be paid by the state, after the student finishes the program.
The Excelsior program is a last dollar scholarship meaning all other student grants or scholarships would be used first before Excelsior picks up the difference.
