Fire of unknown origin destroyed the historic North Java Inn on Route 98 this morning.
Flames spread quickly through the two-story 150-year-old structure. A passing motorist reported seeing smoke streaming from the rear of the building around 7a.m.
A dozen fire companies from Wyoming, Erie and Genesee Counties responded. The firefighting effort was hampered by sub-zero cold that froze up fire apparatus.
One person lived in an apartment on the second floor. He managed to safely escape.
Demolition equipment was brought in to tear down what little of the structure was left standing.
